PROJECT BRIEF

Creation of movie title reveal for an upcoming theatrical release.

Challenge

To create a logo title lock up for a film set to hit theaters in 2023 and 2024. This animation will be used for trailers in the theater, online, and on TV.

1.Research

Ballerina is an upcoming American action film directed by Len Wiseman and written by Shay Hatten. It is the first spin-off of the John Wick franchise and is set between the events of John Wick: Chapter 3 – Parabellum (2019) and John Wick: Chapter 4 (2023). In the film, ballerina-assassin Rooney hunts those who killed her family.

Notes

  • Incorporate live-action footage to be composited into the final design for animation.

  • Show both worlds of the elegance of ballerinas and the ruthlessness of assassins.

  • How can the logo be created, design/animation?

  • Slow paced movements with fast-paced movements

2.Design

This concept will be in the direction of a swiss design. This style is to pay homage to earlier action, spy movies to give a different approach to the universe of John Wick. The use of positive and negative in the design will be used to distinguish both sides of the main character Rooney.

This concept is a film approach with the aspects helping to create the sense of theme for the film. Combining elegant and graceful elements of ballet with the edgy, killer side. Showcasing both sides of the character we will see in the film.

This concept is more of a film and collage approach. Emphasizing the rough and real-world aspects of this live-action film. Taking the “new world” characteristics of collage to help build this newly included story into the films for John Wick. Incorporating elements from the character’s background, for example, the organization, Ruska Roma, in the universe of John Wick.

SELECTED DESIGN and LOGO

FIRST PASS

3.Revisons

Our art director told us that our first pass was leaning toward more on the friendly/cute side and that we didn’t have a balance of slow and fast moments to complement the two sides of the ballerina and the assassin. Therefore we came up with a second pass to achieve that goal.

4.More Revisions

We were finally heading in the right direction with our art director’s vision, and he told us just a couple more changes we could make. One major change was how our second frame could showcase the metaphorical gunshot we wanted to achieve with the posing of our model. As well as bringing in more collage elements as far as choppy footage, and design elements. Also explore more uses of our logo.

6.Behind the Scenes

Special thanks to our model: Annaya for being the main subject of our footage and tapping into the vision we had from the beginning!
